Let’s talk about what ScarWork is
Of course, people have scars for many different reasons, surgeries, accidents, etc., and most people have a few. How we each feel about our scars can vary immensely. If that scar is well healed, still improving, or pulling tight and adhering down into the tissue (like in the case of forming adhesions) it can also have a large impact.
Scars are the tissue that knit us together, quite literally, after the skin’s barrier, or internal structures have been breached by what the body sees as trauma. It is activated largely when it feels that the tissue is not strong enough and is calling to lay down more fibrous cells.
The goal of my treatments is easing that pull within the tissue.
When I meet with a client, I first try to notice and feel where their scar is pulling, where the dips, lumps and ridges are, so I can begin to understand how the tissue put itself together. That is the same, whether I’m are treating a scar from a surgery, an accident, or a burn.
I am looking for where the direction of pull is within the scar and where the scar is anchoring itself within the tissue. As the tissues release those fascial connections, the scar can soften, loosen its hold, and begin functioning as healthy normal skin again.
This is accomplished by a wide variety of dozens of techniques, to stimulate the scar to repair and heal. The scar’s surface, and/or edges, can begin to soften tension within the first session, and the person often notices ease of movement, less pull, and improved range of mobility following treatment.
My main message is that scars can improve.
My work is designed to ease the rigidity and tension of a scar and aid in smoother movement and elasticity in the skin so that people can begin doing more of what that scar might be holding them back from.
I look forward to helping you grow more confident in your skin.
